Land and Labor Acknowledgement

Maya Midwifery International, as a 501(c)3 organization registered in the state of Massachusetts, recognizes, honors, and pays homage to the Indigenous peoples of the Massachusetts Tribe, who originated, continue to reside, and maintain a deep connection to this sacred land now considered Boston and Cambridge. MMI also recognizes that the current state and economic progress of Massachusetts developed in the early decades of colonial settlement through the exploitation and slave labor of African and Indigenous peoples, and we continue to acknowledge the contributions made by their descendants.

Naye Xjaw, as a nonprofit civil association registered in Guatemala, working in the highlands of the department of Quetzaltenango, recognizes the Mam and K'iche Maya peoples as those who have been stewards of this land for thousands of years and who continue to advocate for the well-being of Mother Earth and the Maya culture. It pays tribute to the Mam and K'iche peoples who have experienced oppression, exploitation, and coercion throughout the painful history of conquest, colonization, the political "whitening" of the country, and the 36 years of armed conflict, genocide, disappearance, and displacement of the Maya People.

We understand that colonization is not just a concept of the past, but continues to happen around us every day in every way, and we aim to take steps to advance our work and our organizational mission in a way that deeply examines and explores our own individual place within this history through a postcolonial or decolonial lens.
